Rescue Diver.

Rescue Diver.  You may start this course as a (Jr.) PADI Open Water Diver or an Adventure Diver.  Koh Tao, Thailand.

You may take part in the (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course in confined water and in class if you are an Open Water Diver who is at least 12 years old.  If you have the (Jr.) PADI Adventure Diver cert. inc. the Nav. Dive, then you can do the whole (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course.  You do not need to be a (Jr.) PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, which includes the Deep Dive, but you do need this before your PADI Divemaster Course.  This is great if you do not live near a site that has a depth of 18m or more.  You need to have Emergency First Response Primary & Secondary Care, but this may be done with the (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course.  This does not have to be from EFR, but does need to be within the last two years.  It does not have to be done before you start the (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course, but may done along with it.  You need to make sure that 2° Care has been inc., as some of my IDC candidates have found out 🙂

All Rescue Exercises must be done in open water, even if you do them first in confined water.  If you have done the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Course, then you do not have to do Ex. 9 O2 from the (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course.  You do need to make an Emergency Assistance Plan on the (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course for the site where you will do your scenarios.  The EAP need not be done again for your PADI DM Course.

The (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver Course has to take place over at least two days.

For Rescue Ex. 4 Distressed Diver U/W point 3, you need to provide air with an alternate air source and ascend.  As my PADI IDC candidates know, as a (Jr.) PADI Rescue Diver, you need to give the octopus, not just let them take it.  On the PADI Open Water Course, the donor used to just let the receiver take it, but on the Instructor Exam the donor should now play some kind of active role, a bit like on the PADI Rescue Course.

Each two months on the paradise Island of Malapascua, off Cebu, in the Philippines, award-winning PADI DSAT TecRec Course Director Dan Robinson runs his.
