Ice Instructor course.

Ice Instructor Course. PADI MSDT Specialty Training. Travel will be required! PADI Ice Diver is needed for certified assistants.

Do you want to dive in lakes with crystal-clear viz. and no crowds?  At this stage, you do not need to wear your snorkel!  If you must take one, it will be stowed away in a pocket, so it is best if you can get hold of one that folds.  You will want to wear a hood and your gloves too.  (I feel the cold the most in my hands and I still need to be able to use both of them with all of my fingers!)  You may wear your dry gloves, but I use my wet three-finger mitts.  As I teach on my tec dive courses, we will use two buckles on our weight belts, as we really do not want to lose them under the ice.  We will each have at least one dive knife (but two are better and should be placed so you can reach both of them with either hand) in case we need to cut lines.  We will each bring a slate, a whistle and a compass.  We each need to take a primary and at least one backup dive light.

Your regs. should have an environmental seal on the first stage to make them less prone to free flow.  We will start to breathe from our regs. U/W with our first use being to inhale from them (and not to exhale through them) and then we will keep them in our mouths, even at the surface in the hole.  We will take a redundant breathing system with us too, e.g. we may dive with twin tanks.  We will breathe not more than one-third of our gas on our way out from the hole, with one-third for the way back to the hole and one-third left for a real emergency (i.e. we will use the rule of thirds or we will be even more prudent than this).  Here, your training dives do not need to last for at least 20 mins. and may be turned when the first diver gets too cold.

The PADI Ice Instructor Course has two dives and the PADI Ice Diver Course has three dives, which may now all be done in one day.  Students for the PADI Ice Diver Course need to be at least PADI Advanced Open Water Divers or similar from other agencies and must also be at least 18 years of age.  Dives are not to be done at night and may be up to a max. of 39m from the hole (inc. both depth and penetration, with a max. of 23m rec.).  The PADI Ice Instructor Course has topics inc.

  • Dive planning (inc. at least 4m deeper than the max. depth, as per the RDP Rules).
  • Hole-cutting with a chain saw or an axe, etc.
  • Use of tenders, lines and signals.
